The Shack

Read the bible instead.
Lynn wrote a comment on another blog regarding 'The Shack".  This topic deserves it's own starting point rather than bury it in the comments section.  I started to write about this several times.  The first time I stopped because I didn't want to trash a book I hadn't read.  But now, I've read reviews from people I trust.  There are too many good books to read to waste time on 'not so good' books.

"The Shack" has become a popular book on the christain books stores must read list, but did you know that it contains 13 heresies.I heard about this on "Leading the Way .org" ( to find this info-just type in the books title to the search bar to get the full article.)I am thankful for Michael Youssef's research because so many people just read what's new and don't challenge a books content or compare it to the Bible. It reminds me alot of another blog about Rick Warren. Too many just assume that if a person has a title in the christian community that whatever is said by that person or written is scriptural. Are these all subtle tactics of our adversary to swallow unbibical ideas in order to pollute the Gospel? Check it out and see what you think. I mentioned this controversy to a friend who had read "The Shack". My friend became immediatly defensive-because they did not want to beleive that they could be deceived. Even after checking out the article, this person was still defending the spirital quality of the book-(or maybe the defense was refusing to admit that we can be deceived) if so, there inlies the greater deception. Sometimes the enemy doesn't need much help to get us off track. I am thankful for those who research things on our behalf and save me from drinking polluted waters."

I wrote this several weeks ago in another place - so I did a cut & paste:

There are many Christians today that have taken 'The Shack' to church to share the spiritual message.  This book is being studied in bible studies and Sunday school classes all over America. The book was written by William Young and it's the story about dialogues between Mack, the main character and three unorthodox characterizations of the Holy Trinity.  Mack is spiritually reborn from an unhappy man with a tortured past over a 48 hour encounter in the woods with a black woman who represents God the creator; Jesus is a big nosed carpenter in a plaid shirt; and the Holy Spirit is an Asian woman named Sarayu.  Denominations and doctrines are slammed along with legalistic religion.  The Bible is rarely mentioned.  Many Americans have now spent more time reading The Shack than they have reading their bible.  Their understanding of God comes from a novel. They like the message that accommodates feelings over doctrine.  It appeals to the rebel in us to oppose and downright trash orthodoxy.  It's a mockery of the Holiness of God.

And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you.  For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.

The modern day evangelical church lacks sufficient leadership to move toward holiness.  The movement is away from holiness and toward personal fulfillment.  So many are being deceived!  Do you see your church growing toward holiness?  Is your fellowship in pursuit of the things of God?

Lynn is right.  This book isn't just going away and it's dividing Christianity.  I've read and heard so many stories about people getting defensive enough about this book to divide families and churches.  Isn't it amazing that people will defend a book like The Shack or The Purpose Driven Life?  I rarely see people defend the bible with as much passion.

Here are the 13 heresies of The Shack per Michael Yousef as suggested by Lynn

And here are some comments by Tim Challies and a link to his review.

Thanks Lynn for warning others about the dangers of drinking from the polluted waters.
