Leviticus 3:1-17
Peace Offering (the well-being offering)
- The third freewill offering.
- A fellowship or communion offering indicating reconciliation and peace between God and his people.
- In addition, peace with family or community also present.
- The offering symbolized eating together with God.
- Part was offered to God and part was eaten by the person offering.
- Used in various ways to express worship, praise and thanksgiving.
- Others could eat the meat, Lev 7:11-36.
- This is why the prohibition of blood and fat is added on the end.
- While the primary purpose wasn't for atonement, it included that aspect.
- Peace with God through sacrifice, innocent blood.
- The offering is described as coming from the herd.
- This would be a bull or cow, sheep, goats
- This offering could be either male or female.
- You were to put your hand on the head of the offering and slay it at the altar.
- The blood would be sprinkled on the altar by the priest.
- Specific fat and other inner parts were burned up in the fire and was a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
There is an interesting line tacked onto the end of this section. Verse 17 says it is a perpetual statute throughout generations that you shouldn't eat fat or any blood. Leviticus 17:11 said that the life is in the blood. Since this is the only offering where the worshiper ate the meat, it was the one most likely to bring a violation of this.
