Numbers 17

The Budding of Aaron's Rod

Numbers 17:1-7

The Lord devised a test to further establish His authority to choose Aaron and put an end to the rebellions.  Each family provided a rod with their family name on it.  The rod (staff- symbol of leadership) chosen by the Lord would blossom indicating the Lord’s choice of the priesthood.  The twelve rods were gathered and placed before the ark in the tabernacle of witness before the Lord.

Numbers 17:8-12

The next day Aaron’s rod was the only one to have budded, blossomed and yielded ripe almonds.  God displayed his power and control for the people.  The almond could also be a picture of His ability to provide.   The word used for almond is related to a word meaning watchful & wakeful.  The almond was the earliest plant to blossom in the spring.  Some see symbolism in that.

The rod was to be kept as a sign and reminder that Aaron lineage was God’s choice for the priesthood and it was not to be challenged.

The message was heard as the entire congregation was characterized as thinking they would all die.  They must’ve each known their own rebellion.
