Numbers

Numbers 36

Marriage of Femaile Heirs

The daughters of Zelophehad were allowed to inherit their father’s land since there were no sons.  This was outlined in Numbers 27.  However, the tribal leaders discovered a problem.  If the daughters married someone of another tribe, the land of their father would then transfer to a different tribe.  The land of their father could essentially be given away to other tribes.

The remedy of the problem is then given as an amendment to them being able to inherit.  They had to marry within their tribe, that way the land would remain within their father’s inheritance.  The five daughters married the sons of their father’s brother – their cousins.
