Psalms

Psalm 72

By Pastor Doug
The righteous king
This Psalm could be a Coronation Psalm for Solomon.  Early in Solomon's reign as King it was a prosperous and exciting time for Israel.  This was he son who would carry on the Davidic dynasty.  Because Solomon is in the line between David and the Messiah King, the Psalm may well be viewed as messianic in some places.  It is possible Solomon wrote this Psalm.  If so, it is more of a prayer to God to be with him as he assumed the role as king.  It is also possible that David wrote the Psalm about Solomon.  If that is the case it would be more of a prayer that the people would lift before God to ask His blessing on the new king.

A Psalm of Solomon.

 1 Give the king Your judgments, O God,
         And Your righteousness to the king's Son.
 2 He will judge Your people with righteousness,
         And Your poor with justice.
 3 The mountains will bring peace to the people,
         And the little hills, by righteousness.
 4 He will bring justice to the poor of the people;
         He will save the children of the needy,
         And will break in pieces the oppressor.
This is a call for God to empower the king to represent Him before the people.  The view is that the king will bring justice by bringing the right judgments of God.  The king would be empowered by God to Judge righteously as the Lord would.  It was a given that the people needed God's righteousness.

Imagine if our president represented God and their judgments were righteous.  Instead, our world would look at this and see it as a call for social justice.  Justice is giving people what they deserve.  This is a call to bring those people to justice who oppress the poor, the children and the weak.  Then, these people would be taken care of by charity from the people of God.  Our culture has made social justice mandatory to take care of the poor, the children and the weak by taking money from others.  This does not qualify as justice or charity and doesn't even do a good job of meeting the needs of these people groups.

We could view this as messianic in that Christ will reign on earth when He returns.  He is the King of Kings.  As the Son, He will have the righteousness of the Father.  For men to establish godless replacements for this in our world is a blasphemy and idolatry.

 5 They shall fear You
         As long as the sun and moon endure,
         Throughout all generations.
 6 He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing,
         Like showers that water the earth.
 7 In His days the righteous shall flourish,
         And abundance of peace,
         Until the moon is no more.
A king ruling and judging by the righteousness of God will be different and get the attention of the world.  Those who oppress people will fear him.  He will bring blessing on his people.  They will experience abundant provisions because of Him.  The people could see this as eternal in the Davidic line of kings.  In this way, we see Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of the Davidic throne when he sits on the throne and rules forever.

 8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea,
         And from the River to the ends of the earth.
 9 Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him,
         And His enemies will lick the dust.
 10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles
         Will bring presents;
         The kings of Sheba and Seba
         Will offer gifts.
 11 Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him;
         All nations shall serve Him.
Wow!  King Solomon stepped into the large shoes of King David.  In doing so he was suddenly one who had influence throughout the world.  From sea to sea, even Tarshish and the isles, along with Sheba and to the ends of the earth will all bow down and bring presents to the King.

In the same way, the world will be changed in the events of the tribulation.  The end of that time will usher in the New Millennium.  All the earth will know who the King is and they will bow to Him.   What a fascinating thought and we can only watch as the events unfold leading to that time.  What a contrast that will be to the world we live in now as so many trust in men and politics and political parties to usher in some better day.

 12 For He will deliver the needy when he cries,
         The poor also, and him who has no helper.
 13 He will spare the poor and needy,
         And will save the souls of the needy.
 14 He will redeem their life from oppression and violence;
         And precious shall be their blood in His sight.
Jesus Christ won't make empty promises or use the widows and children to get votes.  He will be the only one to ever truly address the problems justly.  He will redeem them from oppression and violence.

 15 And He shall live;
         And the gold of Sheba will be given to Him;
         Prayer also will be made for Him continually,
         And daily He shall be praised.
The response of men to the righteous king; what can we truly offer?  All we have will fall short of being worthy; however, men will offer Him the finest Gold, make their prayers for Him, and daily sing His praise.  Worthy is the lamb!

 16 There will be an abundance of grain in the earth,
         On the top of the mountains;
         Its fruit shall wave like Lebanon;
         And those of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
Under the perfect and righteous reign of the Lord there will be no needy or oppressed.  Hunger will be wiped out and the people of the city will flourish.

 17 His name shall endure forever;
         His name shall continue as long as the sun.
         And men shall be blessed in Him;
         All nations shall call Him blessed.
It is amazing that this was written regarding King Solomon when it is so messianic.  His name will undoubtedly endure for eternity.  Men and nations will be blessed by their standing and relationship with the King.

 18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel,
         Who only does wondrous things!
 19 And blessed be His glorious name forever!
         And let the whole earth be filled with His glory.
         Amen and Amen.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done.....on earth as it is in heaven.

 20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

This ends the Book II of the Psalms.
