Psalms

Psalm 82

By Pastor Doug
The Rebuke of Unjust judgment.
"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
.............Proverbs 31: 8-9

A Psalm of Asaph.

 1 God stands in the congregation of the mighty;
         He judges among the gods.
 2 How long will you judge unjustly,
         And show partiality to the wicked?  Selah

God stands among the gathering of all the mighty men of the earth.  These 'mighty' are the judges, kings, presidents, rulers and legislators.  God stands among these men as the just and final judge.  In this gathering of the earthly power, the almighty asks how long they will continue to judge unjustly.  How long will they show partiality to the wicked?  God despises those who judge wickedly.

Men, in their earthly offices, often see themselves as powerful and influential and above any other authority.  In their pride they believe they have all the answers.  They forget that God is the ultimate and final judge.  Whether a man remembers this or not has a profound affect on his ability to lead rightly.

 3 Defend the poor and fatherless;
         Do justice to the afflicted and needy.
 4 Deliver the poor and needy;
         Free them from the hand of the wicked.
God takes up the cause for the poor, fatherless, afflicted and needy.  Those who recognize Him as the final judge will reflect those same values.  This isn't a call to steal from the rich and give to the poor.  It is simply a call for them to be represented as well as the rich and powerful.  Who is the voice for the poor and the orphan?  Who speaks up for the afflicted and the needy?  They have no ability to stand and get anyone's attention.  When they are wronged, no one is appalled at the injustice as they would if the rich and affluent were subjected to similar injustices.

 5 They do not know, nor do they understand;
         They walk about in darkness;
         All the foundations of the earth are unstable.
God established an order to the things of this world.  When these moral standards and principles are continually violated, then the order of things is broken down.  When the rulers of this world are blinded by greed and a lust for power they have no understanding of the damage they are doing.  They walk in moral and spiritual darkness undermining the ways of God.  When the entire world acts in this way, the foundations of the earth are unstable.

We can all agree that the foundations of the earth are being shaken right now.  The family is being attacked, marriage is being attacked, and Christianity and the word of God are under fire.  Our world is walking in spiritual darkness.  Many of the leaders of this world are completely out of touch with people who actually work for a living.  They just play us for support or votes to maintain their power.  Every election we see both parties try to identify themselves as the party who really cares about you, your future and your children's future.  And it all seems to be smoke and mirrors.  Who speaks for the unborn babies?  Who speaks for poor and the needy?  Who speaks for the widow and orphan?

Micah 6:8

8He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justly,
(verse 2 - they failed at that)

To love mercy,
(verse 3&4 - they failed at that)
And to walk humbly with your God?
(verse 5 - they walked in darkness)

 6 I said, "You are gods,
         And all of you are children of the Most High.
 7 But you shall die like men,
         And fall like one of the princes."
Jesus quotes verse 6 in John 10:34.  These earthly leaders acted as if they were gods, as if they answered to no one.  God said, you are gods in that they represented the Most High God.  They were given a position of authority on earth to act in a manner representative of the Living God.  But they failed at that assignment.  God said they would die like mere men.  They would discover their own mortality and fall like a tyrannical prince.  The princes and kings of that day that were corrupt towards the people died brutal and awful deaths.

 8 Arise, O God, judge the earth;
         For You shall inherit all nations.

God is the judge of the earth.  The Psalmist calls for Him to arise, exercise His power and authority over the nations.  Whatever power God allows today is by His hand and in His time.  There is a day coming when God will directly assume all power over the nations.
