2 Kings

2 Kings 7

The Syrians Flee

2 Kings 7:1-2

Remember in chapter six that a little bit of dove droppings sold for five shekels and donkey's head for eighty.  The prices in verse one predict affordable food again.  The officer didn't believe it.  This was too dramatic of a change in a day; what he was saying is that not even God could pull this off.  The Lord could make windows in heaven if he so desired.  He could reverse it at any time by his will.

Elisha prophecied to this unbeliever that he would, in fact, see it with his own eyes but not eat of it.  His unbelief would keep him from enjoying the blessings from the hand of God.

2 Kings 7:3-16

The first prophecy is fulfilled when the Lord put fear in the hearts of the Syrians.  They heard the approach of a large army and made a run for it.  You have to wonder how long the Israelites would have remained hidden and starving if it hadn't been for these desperate lepers.  The figured they were going to die anyway, they might as well surrender and live; only they found there was no one to surrender to.  What a gift this was to these two men.  They went from death to life abundant in very short order.

When this was reported to the king he eventually discovered it to be fact.  As they plundered the food of Syrians, the prices dropped to what the the Lord predicted.

2 Kings 7:17-20

The seccond prophecy was fulfilled when the unbelieving officer saw the prices drop like the windows of heaven were opened.  It was then that he was trampled at the gate when people were going after the food of the Syrians.
