1 Chronicles

1 Chronicles 1

The Family of Adam
Seth to Abraham
Family of Ishmael
The Family of Keturah
The Family of Isaac
The Family of Seir
The Family of Edom

The book of Chronicles starts offwith the Genealogies of Israel; starting with Adam and following throgh to captivity and return. While this seems like dry reading, we should not forget these were real people. Even the most obscure names only mentioned once were important to the heritage and the lineage of the Jews. God used these people just like Noah, Adam, Moses and Abraham.

While Adam and Eve also had Cain and Able, it is the line of Seth Chronicles is interested in. It quickly makes its way to Noah and then his three sons. Shem was the father of the Semites. Ham was the father of Cush, Put and Canaan; Cush & Put are African countries. Canaan was the Amorites, Hittites, Jebusites, and more. The sons of Japheth include Gomer and Magog; some names that show up in prophecy and become interesting later.

Within the line of Shem, we see Eber in verse 19. This name is where the word Hebrew comes from. Also in verse 19 we see Peleg, named within this time because "the earth was divided". This is probably a reference to Genesis 11 regarding the dividing of the nations. The lineage of the other sons drop off; leading to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Isaac's oldest son was Esau. He is the father of the Edomites. Seir was the region in which they settled. The Horites were in the land prior to Esau and prior to them having kings. The family of Esau mixed with the people of Seir to become the Edomites.
