1 Chronicles

1 Chronicles 5

The Family of Reuben
The Family of Gad
The Family of Manasseh (East)

1 Chronicles 5:1-10

Reuben was the firstborn of Israel but he lost his birthright because of sin. This birthright went to the sons of Joseph after he defiled his father's bed. In Genesis 35:22 we see that Reuben laid with his father's concubine, Bilhah. This was an act of rebellion against the headship of Jacob. The genealogy is shown also in Numberse 26:5-11; also in Numbers 26 we learn of the tribe of Reuben's involvement in Korah's rebellion by Dathan and Abiram (Numberse 16).

The war mentioned in verse 10 happened in Saul's days; Reuben joined with Gad and the half tribe of Mannasseh to war against the Hagrites. The Hagrites appear to have been a seminomadic group from the Transjordon region. They are only mentioned here and Psalm 83:6.

1 Chronicles 5:11-26

Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh were allies on the east side of the Jordon. Together these tribes fielded an army of 44,000 men. It was noteworhty that they trusted the Lord and cried out to Him in battle and He gave them victory. This was a great victory that made them rich in spoils.

However, after conquering the land, they were characterized as unfaithful. They chased after other gods of the people of the land. God used Assyria to bring judgment on them for this sin.
