All the families of the Levites are introduced in Exodus 6:16-25. The clans of Levi descended from Gershon, Kohath and Merari. Kohath was the ancestor of Aaron and Moses; the Kohathites became the line of priests.
David appointed Levites to minister befor the ark and serve as Temple musicians.
