1 Chronicles

1 Chronicles 9

Dwellers in Jerusalem
The Priests at Jerusalem
The Levites at Jerusalem
The Levite Gatekeepers
Other Levite Responsibilities

The chronicler moves to cataloging those who returned from exile. The list is focused primarily on the priests and Levites. This passage parallels Nehemiah 11:3-19.

The Shilonites of verse 5 were possibly those from Shilo, a city of Ephraim. The prophet Ahijah was a Shilonite (1 Kings 11:29).

The list of Levites was an important one in maintaining the integrity of the priesthood. It's always fascinating when we see among many names, one that has a comment added to it. We see this with Phinehas, the Lord was with him.

In verses 22 thru 27 we see the authority of David and Samuel had survived the years in that these gatekeepers were in charge of opening the temple every morning. They guarded the chambers and treasuries against defilement and theft.

The genealogy of Saul is again repeated to close out the genealogies and to begin the historical narrative.
