The Divisions of the Priests
Other Levites
The Chronicler now gives information on the assignments of the religious duties. These priests were the sons of Aaron. Nadab and Abihu were killed for offering strange fire (Lev 10:1). The sons of Ithamar and Eleazar were given their assignments to make up the 24 divisions. Casting lots was used so that it was God's decision and not the biased, or at least perceived as bias, decisions of men.
It appears that Zadok and Ahimelecch were co-high priests. This aligns with 1 Chronicles 18:16 and 2 Sam 8:17. This doesn't match what is seen throughout first and second Samuel which identifies Zadok and Abiathar as priests. The priests were put into a rotation by lot, but Aaron gave the assignments of duties as God had commanded him (v 19).
