1 Chronicles 28

Solomon Instructed to build the temple

All the leaders of Israel were gathered together so David could indicate God's charge for Solomon to be the next king and build the temple. David explains that he was disqualified from building the temple because he was a man of war. The 'man of rest' was designated as the building. As a 'man of war' David couldn't provide a place of rest for the Ark.

David encouraged the leaders in being faithful and obedient in all God commanded. This wasn't a 'try real hard' speech or some instruction to bring a passive obedience; they were to carefully seek out the commandments. This sounds a lot like the words Moses used as the Israel was coming into the land.

David then turns his attention to just Solomon. His service was to characterized as wholly loyal and obedient. It wasn't enough to just go through the motions; but the thoughts and intentions must be right. The charge was given, the resources provided and now the plans given to Solomon.
