2 Chronicles

2 Chronicles 17

Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah

2 Chronicles 17:1-6

The reign of Jehoshaphat was likened to that of King David; he walked with the Lord and the Lord was with him. The 'therefore' of verse five is a direct result of his trust and obedience to the ways of the Lord. The people followed Jehoshaphat, he led the people; this established the kingdom in his hand. He was honored and given great riches. This is the Lord just pouring out his blessing on Jehoshaphat who's heart took delight in serving the Lord.

2 Chronicles 17:7-11

Part of the law of God that Jehoshaphat was loyal to was that the king led the people in the ways of God (Deut 17:18-20). He was to know and promote and constantly be reading the law to guard his heart.

The nations knew that the Lord protected Jeshaphat and the kingdom of Judah. This struck fear in them and kept them at peace. Even the Philistines were afrad of him and brought tribute to him; as well as the Arabians.

Jehoshaphat became very powerful and respected; besides riches and honor, he also had military might. We often see this become a problem. The great army was part of the blessing from God; the blessings didn't come from having a great army.
