Isaiah 18

By Doug Ford
Proclamation Against Ethiopia

Isaiah 18:1-2

The oracle shifts toward Ethiopia (Cush).  It is a prophecy against Cush; a woe to this land.  The land is shadowed with 'buzzing wings'; some belief this is the 'winged boats', boats with a sail.  They are desperate to find allies and sent ambassadors by sea.  They travel light and fast in their reed boats, time is of the essence.  The tall and smooth, terrible people and powerful nation might the Assyrians.  If they are appealing to the Assyrians, it may be against Egypt.

Isaiah 18:3-7

This is Isaiah calling to the world at the cry for help from the Ethiopians.  When God lifts a banner, everyone will see it.  When the trumpet is blown there will be no mistaking it for another.  God remains sovereign, quietly waiting for His time of action.  Harvest is coming.  God is calling the shots and there will be a cutting and pruning.

The nations continue to disregard the Lord and trust in their plans.  The ambassadors called out to these people tall and smooth.  But the tall and smooth people were being directed by the Lord.  In that time – the time of judgment – these people will be acting on God's behalf like all the nations.  But the Lord also quietly waits for another time.  In that day, when the Lord subdues the nations, they will bring their tribute to Him in His dwelling place of Mount Zion.
